Dear Jenny,
We had three surprising returns on last night's Project Runway, and only one of them was happy. Over the past year-and-a-half (Has it really been only that long? What did we do before competitive dress-making?), I've gradually become obsessed with Collier Strong. I'm a boy; I rarely wear makeup (aside from bronzer, of course). And yet . . . every time I see that ad in which Collier gives that happy model smoky eyes, I have to drop everything, watch and try to memorize. There's something so urgent yet confident about him: he's like the Winston Wolfe of the face.
So that was nice, albeit too fleeting. (Bravo: Hook Collier up already: Project Lipstick? That one's a gift.) Not as nice? The return of Angela (eh) and Vincent (oh hells no). Big Brother and Survivor have both worked this twist in the past and I don't think it's ever worked. It feels like a big, fat cheat and it's not fair to the designers who did not get eliminated. It's not great for the eliminated designers, either -- had Angela or Vincent won, it would have seemed illegitimate, sort of a 61* thing. And it's not great for the viewers. We've come to depend upon the structure of the show and if people are going to start coming back for no clear reason, why can't those people be Austin Scarlett? I did not like this at all and I blame Klum.
The fashions were great, though, didn't you think? Laura's dress was beautiful. I was worried when I saw her sketch, because it seemed like a too obvious pander to the judges, but I loved the finished design. The details were great. I actually felt very protective of Laura -- even though the editing made it pretty clear that she was going to win the challenge and even though I think that generally she, more than anyone else on this show, can take care of herself. I can understand why Kayne got eliminated this week, but I liked his as well. Michael's -- also good . . . Uli's -- a bit of a mess, but, I thought, less predictable than the judges seemed to think it was. I really did not care for Jeffrey's ensemble. It seemed, as Kayne would say, like something a working girl would wear.
I watched the scenes for next week, but now have no recollection of them. Do you? Is it possible that next week we're going to find out who's going to Olympus Fashion Week (which is occurring right now)? Do you already know who those people are? I feel like I'm going to have to keep my eyes closed the entire time I'm on the Internet until this is all over.
Love,
-- Pete
