Dear Jenny,
I'm still marvelling over how perfect this week's Project Runway challenge was. Design for each other's mothers? Oh my God. So brilliant. They should do that every week. (Wait. Next, each designer should have to design for his or her nemesis.) It's not just that the drama was great, it's that the challenge actually required skills the designers should have, such as knowing how to create clothes for people who aren't stick figures -- unlike, say, making dresses out of peanut bags (no offense, Laura).
I'm so sad about Robert being declared "out," though. I want him back. He was the funniest of the designers -- he had the best comic timing. Ugh. I'm heartbroken. I'm not sure who else could have gone, though. I'm not condoning Jeffrey's behavior toward Angela's mother, at all, and I actually really hated the dress he made for her, but it would have been very dark to send him home, this week, as a result of that conflict, and in front of his delightful mother. Furthermore, it would have been an injustice because he deserved immunity for last week's unfairly-overlooked trompe l'oeil dress. What else was really bad this week? Angela's "Steve Nicks in black" was not good, but not entirely heinous, either, and remember that she was working with a self-described difficult client, Laura's mother.
How great was the reveal about Laura's pregnancy? I had read elsewhere that Laura was pregnant during the shooting of Project Runway, so this wasn't exactly a surprise for me, but it was very amusing that it was a surprise -- and not an entirely happy one -- for her mother. I really love Laura. I think that you wanted, at some point, to talk at length about her in relation to some Ayn Rand character? I would try, at this point, to steal your thesis, but I'm no longer an undergraduate and therefore have no knowledge of Ayn Rand or her works, so . . . knock yourself out. I will say that for me, the primary appeal of Laura is the disconnect between the refinement of her wardrobe (and hair!) and the coarseness of her language.
Weren't the Moms pretty much all great? I really liked the dynamic between Kayne and his Mom -- loving, but did you notice that his teeth were clenched and he was staring at the ceiling for like the entire episode? How did he manage to complete the challenge?
Love,
-- Pete
