I've talked around my cable situation in previous posts. Basically, when I moved, I tried to go without cable. I lasted for possibly five months, but then the summer started, I got all twitchy. It got so bad I was even willing to pay for installation. Then two weeks and three different installation appointments came and went. Now I'm hooked up again, just in time to note that all the best programming for the summer is on basic cable, and to note that the summer is almost over. I spent the entire weekend catching up on what I missed. Here are some out-of-date observations:
The Hills. I've lost hours to this show and I have no idea why. It's not even remotely interesting. It's beautifully shot, but the performances -- is that the right word? -- are incredibly stilted and nothing ever, ever happens. I liked L.C. during the first season of Laguna Beach, but I have no idea how she became the new face of MTV, except -- let's be honest here -- Kristin Cavallari had something better to do. (Even if that "something better" was co-hosting a short-lived makeover show with Ethan Erickson. On UPN.) I love the episode -- I'm sure this originally aired months ago -- in which Lauren's unspeakable roommate Heidi Montag drops out of school because she's landed her dream job as an event promoter, only to consider quitting that job when she learns that she actually has to work full-time. I know. You almost feel sorry for her when her boss tells her, "Order me lunch." Seriously, those are the most hateful three words in the English language.
Saved. I like Tom Everett Scott a lot, but his new show sucks. OK. Unlike Rescue Me, it's not aggressively offensive, but also unlike Rescue Me, it's not fresh, compelling or funny.
Blade. I saw maybe one and a half of the films on which this series is based and I read Marvel comics, so I shouldn't find this so hard to follow, right? Basically, everyone's after some MacGuffin and there's a serum and "daywalker" this and something else . . . and I'm bored. I feel like maybe Underworld made vampires permanently uncool and we need to find a new myth. What about fairies?
Kyle XY. After the pilot, the weird pedophilia stuff died down a little bit and it seems like the show found its rhythm. It feels a little like it should be airing on The N or even CTV, and I mean that as a good thing. The cast is not as pretty as the casts of the other teen shows, but they're interesting to watch. The writing is sometimes a little awkward, but seemingly genuine. I'm actually really interested in the oddly frank way in which sex gets handled on this show, considering that it's airing right before The 700 Club. -- Peter
Agreed! The writing is awkward and nothing like the original character they took Kyle from, which is female, part alien and navel-less Aira. I'm going to reread my old copy of "Flight Quantum Fiction". Kyle reminded me how badly I missed hanging out with Aira Flight in Vanna Bonta's adventure.

I thought so too. I couldn't believe it.
